01:133:401 – Spring - Intro to 3D Bioprinting
Introduction to 3D Bioprinting is a 3-credit undergraduate skills training course covering fundamental concepts in bioprinting technology. It covers basic concepts and software programs used in the 3D printing industry, basic understanding of biomaterials and key applications in tissue engineering, and other fields such as pharma, food, personal care, and more. This course will provide students with the opportunity to gain cross-disciplinary technical skills in bioprinting.
Students will learn foundational skills in design, engineering, and laboratory techniques that will support their future careers and/or academic pursuit. They will be able to:
- Explain fundamental concepts and workflow processes in bioprinting
- Utilize associated 3D printing software programs
- Utilize g-code and slicing programs to customize printing parameters and protocols
- Describe the importance of material properties with respect to scaffold design
- Describe various bioprinting applications
Students will learn to print with an SE3D bioprinter and complete a final group design project of their choosing, as well as reading current literature in this emerging field. Students will gain multidisciplinary skills in design thinking and design innovation for potential future applications of bioprinting in prototyping, biotechnology, biomedical healthcare. Transferable skills include CAD, 3D printing workflow, design thinking, presentation skills, and reading and synthesizing scientific articles.
